Social & Environmental Service on becomes 67. Dr Nirmal never celebrates his birthdays and his 67th birthday on 10/10/10 too. (His own quote "I have no time to neither attend my birthdays nor participate. It is no way so important"). Strangely on his birthday, for 10 minutes at 10 pm on 10/10/10, people world over will not celebrate but do something opposite by switching off lights for 10 minutes. ("5 tens") His own idea to fight Climate Change ). No doubt "Treble 10" & "Pentapull " 10" is no easy thing that can happen in one's LIFE. Now let us see how Motivation helped Nirmal in every stage of his life. But the one college which gave him admission was the famous Pachaiyappa's College. He did his B.Com there and joined Law College to do his B.L. The way he chose to thank his alma-mater, Pachaiyappa's College is something very unique. But it took a couple of decades to do it . The college two decades ago celebrated its 150th Anniversary. The college published a directory in which it covered the photographs and life sketch of 150 outstanding students of Pachayappas College of its 150 years of existence. They were called Wonder Students. The 150 who were covered by this book were virtually the most eminent people of Tamilnadu or India , virtually a publication of "Who is who?" The 150 had the greatest ever Aringar Anna, Andhra C.M. Mr. Brahmanandha Reddy, Speaker of Parliament, Anantha Saiyana Iyengar, Speaker of Tamil Assembly, U. Krishna Rao, other V.I.P's , IAS officers, Judges, Scholars, etc. The glad news for Nirmal's name too was there . He considers this as a great achievement of his life. The person, who started his education in an elementary school, was invited by more than 25 international Universities in U.S, England, Malaysia, Singapore and India to give talk and conduct trainings. The participants were very excited when they listened to him and were benefited by his talk. The person who studied in a Government High School was invited by United Nations' UNCHS, to address an elite audience. He got an opportunity to inaugurate the World Mayor's conference in China. He had another wonderful opportunity of presiding over City Managers meeting in Cebu City, Philippines. He addressed the World Bank thrice. 2. Nirmal joined Indian Overseas Bank as a Dispatch Clerk for a monthly salary of Rs 200/-. But by motivation he grew up in the ladder that with in ten years he became a Manager, and in the 12th year he was selected as the best Manager of the bank. In the fourteenth year he was awarded as the Excellent Manager of all the Managers of all the Nationalized Banks of India. These awards were given respectively by the then Finance Minister Mr.V.P.Singh as well as the Reserve Bank Governor. Nirmal galloped from "Zero to Hero" status , all because of Motivation. 3. Nirmal's name was rejected to undergo training in the Premier Institution of the Banking Industry, NIBM in 1986 When he came to know that his name was deleted from the probable list of participants for the training in NIBM, Mr. Nirmal made a declaration that "I will surely go to NIBM". Within six months he entered NIBM not as a trainee but as a trainer. He became a regular visiting / guest faculty to several banks and Bank Training Institutions and he was recognized as an outstanding Trainer by NIBM. He went on to Train the top officials of Insurance Companies, Petroleum Corporations, Corporates, IT industries, the top most Educational Institutions like IIT, MIT and VIT, Engineering Colleges and Arts Colleges. He is quite versatile to speak on variety of subjects and he conducts One Day Training Programme on each of the following topics;
He also took classes for visually challenged members of Dharshini, an affiliate of ExNoRa. Many of them got Doctorate and acknowledged that the techniques taught by Nirmal helped them. Nirmal also being a regular visiting faculty in MANIDHANEYA ARAKKATALAI of a great Samaritan Mr Saidhai Duraisamy .The climax was that Mr.Nirmal was a regular trainer to Administrative Staff College of India(ASCI) where the IAS officers get trained and he is also invited to do one day trainings. 4. When he was a youth, Nirmal's family lost property worth several crores in business. Being a High School Student, Nirmal needed money for his higher education, so he became a part-time sales person of newspapers and periodicals But motivation made him to raise to great heights that the papers that he sold, published his stories and articles. He did contribute to the leading weekly's like Kumudham, Vikatan, Kalki, Saavi etc. He received the best writer award from the honourable Chief Minister in the 10th Anniversary Function organised by the then famous Saavi weekly. i. Mr Nirmal sold Newspapers & periodicals for his livelihood.
But the very same papers wrote in praise of him. Eight newspapers and periodicals wrote Editorials on him. Important among them are ii. Nirmal was a part time seller of magazines and periodicals. But the same books that he sold heaped praise on him. The world's largest circulated Magazine Reader's Digest covered him in their famous "Heroes of Today" column and the magazine wrote that "Nirmal is remarkable because he can inspire people and make them work together and contribute". National Weekly , India Today carried a cover story on Nirmal said that ia . The New Indian Express said that Mr.Nirmal is "one of the six crusaders who are capable of changing India" . The Hindu Wrote about Mr.Nirmal and called him as "an outstanding achiever" and went on to say "Nirmal's optimism is infectious". The Rotary's Inner-wheel recognised him as one of the six pathfinders of India which along with Mother Theresa, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan and published a wonderful book. Rotary News lauded him as the Father of Clean Revolution of India .Famous monthly Wisdom selected him as the Star of India and gave him the award. The South China Morning Post , the largest selling newspaper of Hong Kong wrote an half page article on Nirmal and said that "Nirmal has the ability to bring out the Gandhi in everyone" iv. Nirmal was a part time bookseller But Nirmal wrote several books which all created record in sales. His books gave optimism and motivation on those who read it. The titles are as follows Problems are Gifts, Hurdles as Stepping Stones, Change yourself and Change the World , Encourage others or Get Encouraged, Tell and Win, Be happy and Make others Happy, Principled Simplicity, India towards Golden age, etc. The books that he wrote in English are 5th pillar, Model Town, Model Area and Model Home. His books on Corruption, Take Bribe and Give Bribe, both are popular. v. As a School Student , Nirmal was a part time bookseller of School Textbooks But Nirmal is now part of the 10th standard text book syllabus and there is a chapter on him for the last eight years. It is very strange to see that one finds place in the Text Book even while he is alive. In fact (A former Chief Secretary's grand daughter was reading her text book and about Nirmal, her Grandfather who happened to hear her asked her whether she will be interested to meet Nirmal ? She asked him whether Mr Nirmal is still alive ?) This year's 10th standard exam, there were five questions on Nirmal and ExNoRa. ExNoRa is not only part of the history text book but also finds place in the legal history too. ExNoRa filed a case in the Supreme Court in 1994 on the failure of local bodies in not even removing garbage which is its fundamental duty, ExNoRa won that case in 1996 in the Supreme Court. Consequent to that the Central Government was forced to make an enactment, MSW Rules 2000. It is very natural that the legal history book already has Mr.Nirmal in it. The former Editor of Daily Thanthi Mr.I.Shanmuganathan wrote a book on World History. There is a chapter on Nirmal in that book too. vi .As High School boy Nirmal was a petty trader of news papers But the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), a federation of all the Industries selected him as one of the outstanding entrepreneurs of Tamilnadu, who played a very important role in the dream journey of Tamilnadu's development in the last sixty years since independence. A book too was published by CII. Mr.Nirmal was selected under the category Social Entrepreneur, the reason is that long ago he coined a slogan "Your Garbage is My Business." Today there are several hundreds of small, medium and large entrepreneurs making money from waste. 5. Nirmal's family lost all their properties that must be worth several millions today due to loss in business and they were forced to move to a house in a slum area surrounded by filth and dirt. It was a serious blow and setback for Nirmal who was a youth at that time. When they sold last of their houses , Nirmal's mother made a request to him conveying her desire that they should move to their own house. Nirmal borrowed Rs.45,000 from IOB in 1971 where he was working and was looking to buy a house for that amount in T Nagar as per his mother's wishes. He could not find even an outhouse. Fortunately he came to know that there was a house surrounded by slums that was available for that amount and that the house was kept locked as no one dared to move to that house to live there. Nirmal bought and moved there. His relatives who came to visit Nirmal felt sad on Nirmal's plight. They asked "Can't you move to a better place? . Nirmal made a powerful declaration and said that "Rather than going to a better place , I will make this place better" Rest is history. How did he achieve is more important. Rejecting a suggestion made by a so called friend that it can be achieved by displacing the slum dwellers, he made them partners to his clean & Green Giriappa Road project and part-owners to success. This is a kind of a declaration that he made and made the slum dwellers his friends and motivated several hundreds of them and changed the ugly face of Giriappa Road into a beautiful place. Giriappa Road is now called Greenappa Road. The Giripappa Road exposure paved a way for the birth of ExNoRa. 6. Once Nirmal was a very shy person and he was not even a good conversationalist. Once he was asked to address a meeting and he went before mike and he fumbled for words and sat down. On that day, he took a vow that he will become one of the greatest speakers in India. Motivation totally changed him. Sathyabama University , which conferred Doctorate on Nirmal, said Nirmal is one of the best speakers of India. Famous New India Times published in New York, said "Nirmal speech in St. Louis, Missouri, USA was electrifying. He was pregnant with ideas. He proved that through motivation one can move mountains. People were glued to their seats throughout his speech and when he ended his speech they stood up and gave him a standing ovation". He is a thought provoking speaker both in Tamil and English. He will make people laugh and think. He is also an International Trainer. The great International Service Organizations like Lions, Rotary, Round Table Jaycees have been inviting him to give Key Note address in their respective District Conferences. 7. While he was Bank Officer, he was on the top of his career and a few top officials became jealous of him, and they gave a lackluster post of receiving the VVIPs who came to the airport late in the evenings. One day Nirmal was waiting with a bouquet to receive a VVIP who should arrive from Delhi. The plane came 3 hours late. The VVIP was frustrated with the plane's delay. When Nirmal presented the bouquet, he turned angry against Nirmal and refused to take it. That really provoked Nirmal. He made again a declaration, that henceforth he will not wait at airport and present bouquets. Instead he will receive bouquets. He motivated himself and resigned the job the very next day. He started reaping the benefits of his declaration. Within six months he was appointed as the Director of Coffee Board, Bangalore. He was appointed as an Expert Advisor to Ministry of Environment & Forests of Government of India, also became an Advisor to LIC of India. That necessitated him to go to Delhi, Bombay and Bangalore every month. Where all he went, there were officials of the concerned Departments waiting with bouquets to receive Nirmal. Today Nirmal is also occupying a few important Government Positions, Board Member in the Tamilnadu Welfare Board for Differently-abled which is headed by our Honorable CM. He is a Trustee of TNVRC of Tamilnadu Corporation for Development of Women and he is also the Trustee in the State Water Sanitation Mission of the TWAD Board. 8. While Nirmal was a school student, he wanted to be a doctor which never got fulfilled. But today, undoubtedly Nirmal is a Doctor of our society. He founded ExNoRa (www.exnora.in, www.exnora.org) to cure the illness of the planet namely pollution and environmental degradation. 300 satellite organizations of ExNoRa are functioning now . Undoubtedly corruption is the disease of the Nation. He founded 5th pillar, an anti corruption movement that has become the top most organization in India to cure corruption. He coined a slogan "Eruption against Corruption " . To kill the illnesses plaguing the society, communalism, he founded MA meaning motherliness (www.ma4harmony.org). MA deals with promoting Communal Harmony. People of one religion/caste are not the enemies of another religion/caste. The people have common enemies, viz. Internationally Global Warming and locally mosquitoes and in-between there are two hundred other foes of humankind . People have to join together to take up the common enemies. He discovered a medicine to cure the illness of home namely extravaganza. i.e. spending money beyond one's means and founded an organization too called Principled Simplicity. He has also founded organizations to remedy the illnesses of individuals who become alcoholics. He founded VegEdge to promote vegetarianism. He has founded like that more than 30 Organizations and 30 National Movements. Nirmal once belonged to family of farmers, so he formed Vivasaya Visuvasi (Farm Loyalists) which is spreading across the Villages, he also calls it as Kissan Jahan .Once Nirmal gave an idea to Mysore Tamils when they complained about agricultural not being any more remunerative. He said "why don't you remove your mind boundaries so that land boundaries will disappear?". They took his advice and created an 120 acres Collective Farm which has become the best in the Nation. This model is being replicated in many other places. ExNoRa has set up more than 300 Satellite Organisations as Home ExNoRa, Civic ExNoRa, ExNoRa Innovators Club, Water Bodies ExNoRa, Student ExNoRa, ExNoRa Green Cross, Digital Literacy ExNoRa, Safety ExNoRa, etc. "The miseries that we see around us are not due to the Brutalities of the Bad, but the Silence of the Good" , is Nirmal's strong belief . In this background Nirmal found another truth.Out of the total population, only 1% of people join to do social service and the remaining 99% of people are not available. If they are made to contribute for the common good , particularly for Nation's Development and Social Service, then our country will become a great Nation. Nirmal created so many organizations and outfits and today indeed he is a Doctor of Society. He has also started Service Clubs Synergy Coalition to bring all Service Clubs under one platform and they together transform Villages. In order to get a broad vision and mind, Nirmal started voluntary Sacrifice (www.voluntaryservice.org). 9. Once Nirmal lacked motivation But today he can give motivation and the society develops due to his motivation. Nirmal himself is a beneficiary of motivation. His family progressed due to his motivation, his wife became the Director in Micro Biology Department of Madras Medical College, his son, daughter, daughter-in-law, son-in-law were all top IT professionals in United States. Due to Nirmal's motivation, his bank employees excelled in work productivity and won the awards of National Productive Council of India .Before he became Manager of the bank, Staff Productivity was very low, below the Banking Average. But today due to Nirmal's motivation, lakhs and lakhs of people got motivated and they turned their Streets into gardens and made their houses as enviro- friendly houses. Nirmal is a positive thinker and he sees something good in everything. He coined a slogan "Waste is not waste until it is wasted". He says it is very futile to call it anymore as "Waste Management" instead he calls it "Resource Management". His attitude has been same even in his life. He never calls anybody bad. If the brain is gift of nature and if you accept it as a computer created by Nature , don't call anyone bad. If you want to say so, you can say that one has been programmed to be bad which means very well he can be reprogrammed to be good" according to the Mind Programmer Mr.Nirmal . These are not just empty words . But he has proved as he has transformed several anti-socials through his motivation and mind reprogramming . The top 10 riffraff of Chennai were transformed by him in collaboration with Chennai city police. He has now started transforming the first time offenders. According to him, the criminals are unpolished and raw cut diamonds. They are rocks which are yet to be sculpted and made into statues. They are like Jackfruits, they have tough exterior but certainly they will be sweet inside. His positive attitude made it happen. Several hundreds and thousands got motivated because of his motivation techniques. Thousands of people have got transformed and have become successful in their life. Life has got changed for many. They have reached great heights. People who were on the verge of committing suicides and after attending the programme gave up that idea. In Rane TRW, he conducted more than 21 training programmes and the employees who got motivated by his training went on to win the prestigious Deming Award for the company. Nirmal was given a replica of the Deming award and cash by Rane. Professors of Engineering & Arts Colleges and School Teachers who received his training had excelled in their vocation. Tamilnadu came next to Maharashtra in the Village Panchayat Presidents winning the prestigious Nirmal Puraskar Award of Central Government. When the Government of Tamilnadu asked the winning Presidents to share the secret of their success , many of them said that it was Nirmal's training that motivated them. So far, in this year, he has been entrusted with 62 one day training programmes for training reprogramming the minds of 6200 Panchayat Presidents, under the topic "Are you just Panchayat Presidents or People's Leaders?". Nirmal like a cyclone is moving fast, in just 90 days he has to conduct 62 training programmes, and already he has completed 25 programmes in 30 days, now he has started a village grass root revolution. A good Nirmal's virus is spreading fast through the villages. The villages are going to become a heaven or a paradise very soon. 10. Once Nirmal lacked even routine thinking. He did not have any goal nor he knew what he is going to become in his future . But today, he is one of the India's best creative thinkers and he has got the recognition. Way back in 1990, Innovators for Public , USA recognised as an outstanding Social Entrepreneur and Innovator for Public and gave him cash award too. Every second he gets a new idea; his innovations in the fight against Climate Change is very novel. "88888 Lights Out", "99999 Lights Out" and "101010101010 Lights Out" are all very innovative and attracted thousands of people. People did switch off lights and the power consumption dropped steeply during that period to 20 %. He also introduced ExNoRa Magic Log Book, so that it becomes an evidence of the carbon that was cut down and one can measure one's carbon footprint (even each family) . He formed Toy-Joy through which affluent children gave their toys to poor children. Platform has been always a major problem. So Nirmal coined a word "Flatform" where even a blind person must be able to walk. The posters marred the beauty of the city. Nirmal started posTear He started a campaign to tear off unauthorised posters and now the Municipal Corporation has taken up that campaign. The corporation of Chennai also tears off posters and put beautiful paintings on the wall. The worst menace is called Noise. Nirmal coined a beautiful phrase "Voice against Noise" which is also an organization. He has developed Sky Farming and Vertical Composting . He started a major Campaign twenty years ago , Smoke-less Bhogie (Pugaiyilla Bogie) He made children stand on the steps of kolu, looking like dolls and he called it LIVE KOLU. In 1993 he did it and it won appreciation of everybody. His mother tongue is Tamil and he loves the language. So he formed Mozhi Mozhi which means first Mozhi is Tamil, and second Mozhi is communication in Tamil, which means that Tamil people should speak in Tamil with other Tamils . For the sake of the Tamils he started Brain Army, which he wants to use to protect Tamilnadu fishermen and those who are caged in fence in Srilanka by Gandhian means "Don't sharpen the knife but sharpen the brain", is the slogan of Brain Army Organization. Teach Reach is another organization which reaches poor children and teaches them through tuition centers. He conducted slum Olympics for slum children, youth who are really mentally and physically strong. Women tie RAKHI on Raksha Bandhan day to their brothers. To develop the spirit of tree protection ,on the Raksha Bandhan day Children tie Rakhi to trees and say "you should protect us". He had implemented thousands of novel ideas when he was a Manager in IOB, Teynampet, like Park 'N' Bank, Relationship Banking, Serve & Sell, etc. because of which the bank's business increased manifold . Conclusion Very often Nirmal was dubbed as good for nothing tree decades ago. But today Nirmal excels in several field that he steps in. He was a pioneer photographer for leading weekly like Kumutham. Today he is called by people as Motivator, Innovator, Change Maker, Mind Programmer, Humourist, Orator, Trainer, Writer, Environmentalist, Social Reformer, and Social Activist and last but not the least, a good human being. Due to motivation, Nirmal got several awards. The TNF & FETNA of North US and Canada selected him as a best Tamil of the world in 1998 and was presented the award in St. Louis. When Mr.Bill Clinton was the then President and when visited India, Nirmal was the only Tamil to be invited to meet him. Nirmal met Mr.Bill Clinton at Agra and shook hands with him and at that time the US Ambassador introduces him to Clinton " As Melvin Jones started Lions Movement in America and Paul Harris started Rotary Movement in United States, Mr.Nirmal started ExNoRa Movement in India. Mr converts every problem as a gift. He motivates people and converts mere population as social capital and great human resource. Recently, Dr Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe invited Nirmal and asked his advice. Organizations like Rotary, Lions, Round Table and Jaycees keep inviting him and has given him an honorary membership. He is probably the only one in the world to get membership in all the organizations. Thanks to his advice, today hundreds and thousands of Villages are becoming to be clean and green. The way he converts the waste into wealth, the State and Central Governments invite him and get his advice. He is an advisor for many State/Central Government Departments. What he did in IOB Teynampet was appreciated by the Ministry of Finance , New Delhi who had forwarded a circular to all Nationalised Banks to follow Nirmal's footsteps. |
